ICN Assignments Enhancement

CMS would like to announce an enhancement in the processing of Encounter Data files, specifically those received on Saturday or Sunday. Currently, the Combined Common Edit Module assigns Interchange Control Numbers (ICN) with the following Monday’s date for accepted encounters when encounter files are processed during the weekend.

With the implementation of the new enhancement, ICNs will now be assigned to accepted encounters with the actual date the files processed. CMS believes this will be a benefit to the industry and allows CMS to target files to know when they were actually processed by the Front-End. Please note that assigning ICNs with weekend dates will not impact the processing of data.
