K0009 MANUAL WHEELCHAIR – CODING VERIFICATION REVIEW REQUIREMENT

NOTE: Revised deadline information regarding the K0009 MANUAL WHEELCHAIR – CODING VERIFICATION REVIEW REQUIREMENT – DEADLINE EXTENDED was posted to the PDAC website February 28, 2013. This article is titled REVISED – K0009 MANUAL WHEELCHAIR – CODING VERIFICATION REVIEW REQUIREMENT – UPDATE, posted 2/28/13.

Recently it has been brought to the attention of the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractors (DME MACs) and the Pricing, Data Analysis, and Coding (PDAC) contractor that some products listed as K0009 (OTHER MANUAL WHEELCHAIR/BASE) on the DME Coding System (DMECS) have not been updated with the most current codes available. All products currently listed on the PDAC website with HCPCS code K0009 will be end dated effective September 30, 2012. Manufacturers will be required to submit a new coding verification application to the PDAC for review and assignment of the correct code for products currently coded as K0009.

Effective for claims with dates of service on or after October 1, 2012, the only products which may be billed to Medicare using code K0009 are those for which a written coding verification has been made by the PDAC contractor and that are listed in the Product Classification List in DMECS maintained on the PDAC website, https://www.dmepdac.com/dmecsapp/. Products which have not received coding verification review from the PDAC must be billed with code A9270.

The PDAC coding verification application required for these products is the Manual Wheelchairs application. This application is located on the PDAC website, https://www.dmepdac.com/review/apps_check.html.

For questions about correct coding, contact the PDAC Contact Center at (877) 735-1326 during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, or e-mail the PDAC by completing the DME PDAC Contact Form located on the PDAC website: https://www.dmepdac.com/.
