CMS Resources for Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF): Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM)
Published 09/12/2019
CMS has finalized a new case-mix classification model, the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM), that, effective beginning October 1, 2019, will be used under the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Prospective Payment System (PPS) for classifying SNF patients in a covered Part A stay. CMS created a web page that includes a variety of educational and training resources to help prepare you for the PDPM implementation.
The PDPM will improve payments made under the SNF PPS in the following ways:
- Improves payment accuracy and appropriateness by focusing on the patient, rather than the volume of services provided
- Significantly reduces administrative burden on providers
- Improves SNF payments to currently underserved beneficiaries without increasing total Medicare payments
We encourage SNFs to bookmark the new CMS PDPM web page and to periodically check for updates.
