Published 02/08/2022

Description
Unrelated evaluation and management (E/M) visit during a postoperative period, or on the same day as a procedure or another E/M visit. (report when an E/M visit is furnished within the global period but is unrelated, or when one or more additional E/M visits furnished on the same day are unrelated.

Guidelines and Instructions
This new modifier (effective for dates of service on or after January 1, 2022).

Critical Care
This modifier should be used for critical care performed by a surgeon during a global period; however, the critical care must be unrelated to the procedure/surgery done. Documentation must clearly support the reason for the service as unrelated to the primary surgical event.

Continue to use HCPCS Modifier 24, 25 or 57 when appropriate for evaluation and management visits furnished during the global period of a surgery that has 0, 10, 90 (and some YYY) global days on the MPFSDB (Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Database).

Refer to the HCPCS Modifier 24, 25, and 57 articles for details as to when the modifiers are appropriate and for coding or documentation requirements. The requirements have not changed.
